Syrian President Sacks Governor Of Central City

Syrian President Bashar Assad

Syrian President Bashar Assad has sacked the governor of a key central city in an attempt to appease an uprising against his rule.

State-run SANA news agency said that Assad fired the governor of Hama. The statement gave no details or reason for the sacking.

Some 200,000 people reportedly took to the streets of Hama in one of the largest of the mass protests which swept the country on July 1.

Activists said at least 11 people were killed in various clashes during the nationwide protests against the Assad family's 40-year dynasty.
