Tajik Troops Kill One In Volatile Badakhshan

One person has been killed and three others injured at a checkpoint in a volatile region of Tajikistan after soldiers opened fire at a vehicle.

Police in the eastern Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province said the driver of a car failed to stop at the checkpoint and did not react to a warning shot.

The incident took place late on August 10.

It comes less than a month after deadly fighting broke out between troops and militants in the remote mountainous region.

The violence was sparked by the July 21 assassination of General Abdullo Nazarov, a regional head of the State Committee for National Security.

The government said at least 12 soldiers and 30 militants were killed in fighting on July 24.
