Tajikistan Hosts International Water Conference

Tajik President Emomali Rahmon

Some 900 representatives from more than 100 countries and international organizations have gathered in Tajikistan's capital for a two-day international conference on water cooperation.

Tajik President Emomali Rahmon opened the conference on August 20 saying, "The cross-border aspect of water cooperation plays a central role in guaranteeing peace, stability, and development, certainly in Central Asia."

The UN has named 2013 the International Year of Water Cooperation, noting that the "fulfillment of human basic needs, our environment, socioeconomic development, and poverty reduction are heavily dependent on water."

The UN points out that more than half of the world's 276 international river basins lack any type of cooperative management framework.
