Taliban Fighters Flee With Hostages After Attack On Security Outpost Kills 23 Troops

Local officials say at least 23 Afghan soldiers were killed late on October 22 when Taliban militants overran their security outpost in the southwestern Nimruz Province.

Bahram Haqmal, a spokesman for Nimruz's governor, said the attackers also escaped with hostages after the nighttime attack in the district of Khaashrud.

A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, confirmed that group was behind the attack.

Afghan air forces bombarded Taliban positions this morning, the district governor said.

Some reports quoted a district official as saying six soldiers were taken hostage.

Violence has continued to rage in Afghanistan despite intra-Afghan peace talks between government and Taliban representatives in Qatar that began last month.

One of the first goals of the talks, Kabul envoys said, was reaching a cease-fire to stem the bloodshed.
