Activists and witnesses say Syrian security forces backed by tanks shot dead 11 civilians when they stormed a town near Damascus on July 27, in the latest attack on demonstrators protesting against President Bashar al-Assad's rule.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which is based in Britain, said tanks and troops surrounded Kanaker, 30 kilometers southwest of the capital, before raiding it.
Witnesses said residents threw stones and set fire to tyres in an effort to block the advance.
Witnesses also said military intelligence agents also arrested up to 300 people in the town and took them away.
Syrian authorities have expelled most foreign journalists from the country, making it difficult to verify witness accounts of events and official statements.
