Moscow authorities have detained a man from Russia's Tatarstan region on suspicion of recruiting fighters for the Islamic State (IS) extremist group in Syria and Iraq.
Interior Ministry spokeswoman Irina Volk said on May 10 that the suspect, whose identity was not disclosed, is a member of the banned Hizb ut-Tahrir group.
According to Volk, the suspect has been transferred to Tatarstan's authorities for questioning.
Russia's Supreme Court banned Hizb ut-Tahrir in 2003, designating it a "terrorist organization." The group is also banned across Central Asia.
Hizb-ut-Tahrir, a London-based Sunni political organization, seeks to unite all Muslim countries into an Islamic caliphate. Members of the organization insist the group is peaceful.
