Dozens of people have demonstrated in Kazan, the capital of Russia’s central republic of Tatarstan, to demand a meeting with a top investigator from Moscow who has come to the city to check on an investigation into alleged police brutality that led to a man's death.
The head of the Russian Investigative Committee, Aleksandr Bastrykin, arrived in Kazan on March 21 for meetings on alleged torture by officers at Kazan’s Dalny police station.
Concerns about police torture have been renewed in Russia following the death earlier this month of a 52-year-old man in Kazan who was allegedly beaten and raped with a wine bottle.
The incident has led other residents of Kazan to file official complaints, alleging that they have been abused by police in the past.
