Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world's longest-reigning monarch, has died after 70 years on the throne.

The royal palace said the king, 88, died in hospital on October 13.

It did not give a reason for his death, which comes as Thailand remains under military rule following a coup in 2014.

King Bhumibol, who was born in the United States, acceded to the throne in 1946 after his brother died.

Though a constitutional monarch with limited powers, he was seen as a stabilizing figure in a country hit by political turmoil and multiple coups.

However, his critics argued he had endorsed military takeovers and at times failed to speak out against human rights abuses.

His presumed successor is his 63-year-old son Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn.
