Separately, some 10,000 mourners gathered on the same day in Sidi Bouzid, the southern town where the Arab Spring began.
Belaid, a critic of the ruling moderate Islamist party Ennahda, was killed January 6 in Tunis as he left home.
Prime Minister Hamdi Jebali, a moderate Ennahda politician, has said he will dissolve the government and install a technocrat cabinet in a bid to ease tensions.
Meanwhile, all flights in and out of Tunisia were canceled February 8 amid a general strike called by Tunisia's largest union.
