Thousands Demonstrate In Armenia's Capital

Thousands of supporters rally in central Yerevan

At least 4,000 opposition supporters rallied on April 28 in the capital of Armenia to demand new parliamentary and presidential elections.

It was the first opposition protest to be held on a central square in Yerevan in three years.

The government had closed the square to protests in March 2008 following clashes between police and demonstrators that left 10 people dead and more than 250 wounded.

The protest was led by former President Levon Ter-Petrosian, who heads the opposition Armenian National Congress.

It was his loss in a February 2008 presidential election that set off the mass protests then.
