Tens of thousands of demonstrators have held a rally in Tokyo, calling for an end to nuclear power in Japan six months after the country's worst nuclear accident.

Organizers say some 60,000 people took part in the rally.

Japan's Fukushima nuclear power plant has been leaking radiation since it was damaged in a massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011.

Tens of thousands of people were forced to leave the area amid fears of contamination.

A survey by Japan's Kyodo news agency showed that about 70 percent of Japanese now favor eliminating nuclear power.

Japan has 54 nuclear reactors, but currently only 11 are in operation.
