A Tunisian court has sentenced ousted President Zine el-Abidine ben Ali to life in jail over his role in the killing of protesters in the central towns where the Arab Spring began.
Ben Ali's interior minister was sentenced to 12 years in jail on June 13 over the same killings, but the court found his security chief innocent.
Ben Ali is in exile in Saudi Arabia and unlikely to be extradited soon.
Earlier on June 13, a Tunis military court sentenced ben Ali in absentia to 20 years' imprisonment on various charges including incitement to murder.
Ben Ali faces countless trials and has already been sentenced to more than 66 years in prison on a range of other charges including drug trafficking and embezzlement.
