Tunisia Marks One Year Since Revolution

Former leader Ben Ali fled to Saudi Arabia

Tunisia is marking the one-year anniversary of the revolution that ousted Zine El Abidine Ben Ali from power.

Ben Ali fled to Saudi Arabia on January 14, 2011 after the self-immolation of a fruit vendor a month earlier sparked protests across the country.

Hundreds of Tunisians gathered in central Tunis on January 14 chanting "work, freedom, and dignity" and "we will continue to fight."

Despite ousting Ben Ali, who had been president of Tunisia since 1987, many of the conditions that led to social discontent when Ben Ali was in power continue to exist today.
