Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has confirmed Ahmet Davutoglu as prime minister and party leader.
The decision for Davutoglu to replace Turkish President-elect Recep Tayyip Erdogan as prime minister came at an AKP conference in Ankara on August 27.
Davutoglu told the conference that membership in the European Union is a strategic target for Turkey and that he will pursue it decisively.
He also said Turkey needs a new constitution with a liberal character.
Erdogan has said he will ask Davutoglu to form a new government on August 28 and announce a new cabinet on August 29.
Erdogan is due to be inaugurated as president on August 28.
He has been Turkey's prime minister for 11 years.
Erdogan is expected to push for constitutional changes that will transform the presidency from what has been a largely ceremonial post into a more powerful position.
