Two Die When Ukrainian Apartment Building Collapses

Emergency officials say two people were killed and two others seriously injured when a stairwell in a five-story apartment building collapsed in western Ukraine.

The incident happened early on June 10 in Lutsk -- about 150 kilometers north of Lviv, which is co-hosting the 2012 European soccer championships.

Ukraine's Emergency Situations Ministry said eight apartments were destroyed when structural supports collapsed in the building, which was constructed in 1971.

Eighteen survivors were treated for injuries and released.

Such accidents are not entirely unusual in Ukraine, where infrastructure is outdated and safety rules often are neglected.
