British Prime Minister Theresa May has unexpectedly called for an early parliamentary election on June 8. In a surprise statement outside her official residence in London on April 18, she said it was the only way to guarantee political stability during Britain's negotiations to leave the European Union. An early election would have to be approved by two-thirds of the lower house of parliament, but opposition parties have said they will support the motion, expected to be submitted on April 19.
