Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has signed a decree establishing a constitutional assembly.
A decree forming the new body was posted on the Ukrainian president's website on May 17.
The constitutional assembly is charged with making changes to the country's constitution.
There will be 94 members, most of them academics and specialists in law and judicial affairs.
The decree proposed former President Leonid Kravchuk as chairman and Yury Shemshuchenko, the director of the Koretsky Institute of State and Law at the Academy of Sciences as deputy chairman.
The decree also invited political parties to join in the work of the assembly.
