Police say a man detonated two grenades during a murder trial in the Ukrainian town of Nikopol on November 30, killing himself and a defendant and injuring nine other people as shrapnel sprayed through the courtroom.

The father of the murder victim took out two grenades in court and set them off, Hanna Starchevska, a National Police spokeswoman in the eastern Dnipropetrovsk region, told RFE/RL.

The man was killed and 10 people -- including the three defendants, guards, and court employees -- were injured and rushed to the hospital, Starchevska said.

One of the injured defendants died in the hospital a few hours later.

The defendants are being tried for the killings of two men with an AK-47 assault rifle in February 2016.
