Seven Dead In Ukrainian Coal Mine Blast

Seven miners have been killed in an explosion at a coal mine in eastern Ukraine.

Nine injured miners have been hospitalized.

Officials said the blast took place late on February 17 at the state-run Pivnichna mine in the Donetsk region.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations said the bodies of the victims were recovered early on February 18 and work at the mine was suspended.

The cause of the explosion is being investigated, but Ukrainian media blamed it on a gas leak.

Fatal accidents are a regular feature at Ukraine's mines.

More than 100 miners were killed in an explosion in 2007 at the Zasyadko mine in the Donetsk region.
