Ukraine's President Orders Investigation Into Power Plant Fire, Help For Victims

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has ordered officials in the Donetsk region to provide whatever aid victims of a fire at a thermal power station in eastern Ukraine require.

Yanukovych told a cabinet session on March 30 that he wanted those injured in the fire to receive medical treatment and also a thorough investigation of the cause of the fire at the power plant in Svitlodarsk.

One person died in the fire on March 29 and at least three others are being treated for burns.

Reports said four of the seven power units at the plant were destroyed in the fire.

The cause of the blaze is unclear.

Deputy Prime Minister Yury Boyko said water and gas supplies had resumed in the area but there were still problems supplying heat to the region.
