UNICEF: At Least 20 Children Killed In Libya City

GENEVA -- The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said today at least 20 Libyan children have been killed and many more injured in the besieged western city of Misrata over the past three weeks.

Rebels have been able to hold on to Libya's third-largest city despite a sustained onslaught by forces loyal to Muammar Qaddafi.

UNICEF said today in Geneva that children as young as 9 months were among the victims and the majority were under 10 years of age. It said they died of shrapnel from mortars and tanks, and bullet wounds from sniper fire.

UNICEF warned today that tens of thousands more children are at risk because of lack of food and safe water in Misrata.
