U.S. Man Charged Over Al-Qaeda

U.S. authorities have arrested a 25-year-old American citizen on charges he planned to travel to Yemen to join the Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula militant group.

Marcos Alonso Zea pleaded not guilty and was detained without bail after his arrest October 18 at his home on Long Island, in New York state.

He was charged with conspiracy to commit murder in a foreign country, attempting to support terrorists, and obstruction of justice.

Officials accused Zea of trying to destroy computer hard drives when he realized he was under investigation.

U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch said: "Despite being born and raised in the United States, Zea allegedly betrayed his country and attempted to travel to Yemen in order to join a terrorist organization and commit murder.”
