The chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Joseph Dunford, said that the United States was capable of protecting its population and that of South Korea in the event of an attack by North Korea. Speaking at a news conference on August 14 in the South Korean capital, Seoul, Dunford stressed that China's role is crucial in enforcing the enhanced sanctions against North Korea passed by the UN Security Council on August 5. North Korea subsequently threatened to fire missiles toward the U.S. Pacific island of Guam. (Reuters)
