The U.S. Army psychiatrist sentenced to death for a shooting rampage at the Fort Hood military base in Texas has been forcibly shaved.

Nidal Hasan, an American-born Muslim, grew a beard in accordance with his faith in the years after the November 2009 shooting that left 13 soldiers dead and 32 wounded.

He is on death row at the military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, after a court-martial in which he was convicted of all charges last month and sentenced to death.

The army said Hasan had been forcibly shaved because his beard violated army grooming regulations. It did not say when.

Hasan has said he carried out the shooting at Fort Hood to prevent U.S. soldiers from being deployed overseas for what he considered illegal wars against Muslims.
