U.S., Iran Officials Plan Face-To-Face Nuclear Talks

Washington is reassembling key members of a team that held secret negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program last year, leading to a breakthrough temporary agreement.

The team includes U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns, Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman, and foreign policy adviser Jake Sullivan.

The European Union’s political director, Helga Schmid, also will sit in on the talks from June 9 and 10.

Tehran says Iran’s team will travel to Rome on June 11 and 12 talks with Russian officials.

Bilateral talks reportedly are planned with other world powers, but the dates of those meetings have yet to be confirmed.

The face-to-face talks come ahead of Iran’s talks with the P5+1 that are due to resume on June 16.

Negotiators are trying to finalize a comprehensive nuclear deal before July 20.
