U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is reportedly in stable condition at a Geneva hospital after breaking his right leg in a bicycling accident in France.

State Department spokesman John Kirby said in a statement on May 31 that Kerry, 71, had canceled visits to Madrid and Paris and will fly home to the United States for treatment.

Kirby said Kerry was expected to make a full recovery.

The accident occurred in Scionzier, France, near the French alpine resort Chamonix.

Kerry had met on May 30 with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Geneva for talks on an agreement to curb Iran's controversial nuclear program, which is due by June 30.

Kerry had been due to meet in Paris with Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi for talks on fighting the Islamic State militant group.
