U.S. General Calls For Cooperation With Russia

Air Force General Philip Breedlove

The U.S. general tapped to serve as NATO's next supreme allied commander has told the U.S. Congress that the alliance must find ways to cooperate with Russia despite rocky relations between the two countries.

Air Force General Philip Breedlove stressed the importance of the U.S. alliance with Europe during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee on April 11.

He had noted in written testimony to the committee that the alliance must "seek zones of cooperation with Russia," noting that Moscow will remain a "primary actor" in the region and that NATO must assure its allies and partners of its "resolve" toward Russia.

Breedlove, however, told the senators that it would send a powerful signal to Iran if the United States and Russia were to cooperate on missile defense.
