U.S. Navy Ship Fires On Boat Off Dubai

A U.S. Navy ship has fired on a small boat after it reportedly disregarded warnings and raced toward the vessel near the Dubai port of Jebel Ali.

U.A.E.'s state news agency, WAM, said the firing killed an Indian national and seriously injured three others. Tarek al-Hedan, an aide to the U.A.E. foreign minister for political affairs, confirmed the killings to the same agency.

A spokesman for the Navy's Bahrain-based 5th Fleet, Lieutenant Greg Raelson, said sailors aboard the "USNS Rappahannock" issued a series of warnings before resorting to lethal force using a machine gun.

Authorities in the UAE are investigating the matter.

Dozens of police and other Emirati officials crowded around the white-hulled boat, which sat docked after the incident in a small Dubai port used by fishermen and sailors.
