Pentagon Chief Orders Review Of U.S. Nuclear Forces

U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel

U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has ordered a review the U.S. nuclear weapons force, which is facing criticism after reports of security lapses, poor discipline, weak morale, and other problems.

The review signals high-level Pentagon concerns about the security of U.S. nuclear weapons and those responsible for maintaining the arsenal.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby, a U.S. Navy rear admiral, told reporters on January 23 that Hagel wants to solve “systemic problems in the training and professional standards” of the military officials responsible for the U.S. nuclear force.

Hagel has summoned senior military officials to a Pentagon conference that is scheduled to be held within the next two weeks to discuss any personnel problems.

He also has ordered an “action plan” to be written within 60 days on personnel issues and how to remedy problems.
