U.S., Russian Officials Meeting On Syrian Crisis

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's diplomatic coordinator on the Syrian conflict is meeting Russian officials in a bid to find common ground on how to respond to the crisis.

The meeting comes after Clinton this week renewed U.S. calls for President Bashar al-Assad’s regime to leave power – and after Moscow again ruled out supporting any international intervention in the crisis.

The U.S. special coordinator for Syria, Frederic Hof, was expected to hold talks at the Foreign Ministry in the Russian capital.

Ahead of the meeting, the Russian Foreign Ministry said it remains in regular contact with Washington about Syria.

Russia, a longtime ally and major weapons supplier to the Syrian regime, has joined China in blocking United Nations Security Council measures targeting the regime.
