The United States has called on Russia to immediately lift its ban on imports of U.S. meat products over America’s use of the feed additive ractopamine.
A joint statement from U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack calls on Moscow to honor its commitments to the World Trade Organization.
The statement added that U.S. meat is “produced to the highest safety standards in the world.”
The Russian ban, which went into effect February 11, stems from concern over the use of ractopamine, a growth stimulant used in U.S. beef, pork, and turkey products to make meat leaner.
Ractopamine is banned in some countries, but the United Nations’ food standards agency says the additive should not impact human health if it is present at only low levels.
