The U.S. soldier held for five years as a Taliban prisoner before being released has returned to the United States.

Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl arrived at a U.S. military health facility in San Antonio, Texas, on June 13 after first receiving care at a military hospital in Germany.

Bergdahl was released by the Taliban on May 31 in a prisoner swap for five Taliban leaders held at Guantanamo.

His release sparked a political uproar because the administration did not notify Congress beforehand.

Some soldiers who served with Bergdahl accuse him of desertion.

Bergdahl was deployed in eastern Afghanistan when he disappeared in June 2009.
