A report says the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) has been gathering nearly 5 billion records a day on the location of mobile phones around the world, enabling the agency to track the movements of individuals.
“The Washington Post” report cites documents provided by former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden.
The report says the phone records that are gathered include those of Americans who are outside the United States.
The report said the NSA is able to access billions of records by tapping into worldwide mobile network cables.
It said this data can allow the NSA to track the movements of almost any mobile phone around the world, in addition to tracking who that user is calling.
The NSA says it does not target mobile phone users inside the United States.
