The U.S. Department of Defense says it will seek to make "condolence payments" to families of victims of an air strike on a hospital in northern Afghanistan.
The U.S. air strike hit the hospital run by Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in the city of Kunduz on October 3, killing at least 22 patients and MSF staff, during fighting between Afghan government troops and Taliban forces. The charity says 33 people remain unaccounted for.
Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said October 10, "One step the department can take is to make condolence payments to civilian non-combatants injured and the families of civilian non-combatants killed."
He added that the United States would also pay to repair the hospital.
"If necessary and appropriate, the administration will seek additional authority from the Congress," Cook also said.
