The U.S. State Department has described as "unfortunate" a melee involving a visiting U.S. college team and Chinese basketball players during an exhibition "goodwill" game in Beijing.
The incident has occurred during U.S. Vice President Joe Biden's current visit to the Chinese capital, and one day after Biden watched the same U.S. squad defeat a Chinese team one night earlier.
The fight broke out near the end of the match between the Georgetown University Hoyas and a Chinese professional squad, the Bayi Military Rockets.
Video showed players from both teams trading punches and members of the crowd throwing a chair and water bottles. No serious injuries were reported.
Georgetown head coach John Thompson said his team "sincerely regrets" the incident, while U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner called it "unfortunate" and noted that such games are aimed at promoting good sportsmanship and strengthening U.S.-Chinese person-to-person exchanges.
No official Chinese statement on the incident was immediately available, and Reuters news agency said Chinese state-run media have so far not reported the incident.
