Official Confirms U.S. Carries Out Drone Strikes

Assistant to U.S. President Barack Obama for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism John Brennan

White House counterterrorism chief John Brennan has publicly acknowledged the practice of drone strikes against Al-Qaeda targets.

Brennan, speaking in Washington on April 30, said U.S. President Barack Obama has ordered more openness about the secretive drone war against terrorist targets.

In his speech on counterterrorism, Brennan gave what media are describing as the most detailed justification and description of the drone program to date.

U.S. officials have generally been reluctant to publicly discuss the secretive program, which has seen numerous of Al-Qaeda suspects killed in tribal areas of Pakistan and some other states.

Brennan said says the strikes are precise but acknowledged that civilians have been killed.

He said in most cases, drone strikes are carried out with the cooperation of a host government.
