The Obama administration has designated a key insurgent commander in southeastern Afghanistan as a terrorist, freezing any assets he has in the United States and barring its citizens from doing business with him.
The U.S. State Department says Mullah Sangeen Zadran is the shadow governor of Paktika Province in southeastern Afghanistan and a commander in the Haqqani network.
It says Zadran leads militants in attacks and has helped hundreds of foreign militants enter Afghanistan.
Washington also has linked Zadran to bombings and kidnappings of Afghans and foreigners in the border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Zadran also has been designated a terrorist by the United Nations, a move that subjects him to a global travel ban, an asset freeze and a weapons embargo.
The Haqqani network has ties to both Al-Qaeda and the Taliban and has emerged as a serious threats to stability in Afghanistan.
