Uzbek President Starts Visit To South Korea

Uzbek President Islam Karimov

Uzbek President Islam Karimov has started a three-day visit to South Korea, seeking more investments in Uzbekistan's economy from the Asian economic power.

Karimov arrives just after the South Korean company Daewoo announced it was suspending work at an oil and natural gas field in western Uzbekistan.

South Korean companies, however, remain active in the exploration and development of Uzbek hydrocarbon deposits.

Daewoo also has an automobile manufacturing plant in Uzbekistan.

Karimov's arrival comes one week after South Korean President Lee Myung-bak visited Kazakhstan and told media there that Seoul is seeking to replace its reliance on energy resources from the Middle East with energy supplies from Central Asia using railway lines and pipeline networks.
