Uzbek Border Guards 'Holding Kyrgyz Citizen'

It is still unclear why Uzbek security forces arrested a Kyrgyz man at a border checkpoint.

BISHKEK -- Kyrgyz border officials say Uzbek border guards are refusing to release a Kyrgyz citizen detained on December 4 despite a pledge to Kyrgyz authorities to do so, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

Bozulan Mamyshov, head of the Sakaldy checkpoint on the Kyrgyz-Uzbek border in the southern Kyrgyz region of Jalal-Abad, told RFE/RL that the Uzbek border guards promised to release Mansurbek Bekeshov on December 5, but failed to do so.

Uzbek border guards detained Bekeshov on December 4 while another Kyrgyz, whose name was not given, managed to elude the Uzbek guards and go to Kyrgyzstan.

Mamyshov said Kyrgyz officials are negotiating with Uzbek border guards regarding Bekeshov's release.

It is unclear why the border guards arrested Bekeshov.

In May, Uzbek border guards shot dead a Kyrgyz citizen in the village of Sakaldy. Nobody was prosecuted for the shooting.
