Uzbek Couple Charged With Manslaughter, Robbery Over Spree

TASHKENT -- A couple believed to have terrorized the Uzbek capital for the past year has been charged with manslaughter and robbery.

Sources close to Tashkent law enforcement told RFE/RL on October 3 that a man and a woman who lived in a village near Tashkent were arrested on September 30 and their house was searched by police.

Jaloliddin Khalilov, 37, and his partner, Nargiza Urazimbetova, 35, are suspects in a series of robberies of single elderly citizens in Tashkent and elsewhere across the country.

According to sources, the couple has confessed to 14 robberies.

They allegedly tied their victims up and taped their mouths shut before robbing them.

At least five of the victims died of suffocation before they were found by neighbors.

The couple reportedly used their underage daughter to assist them in the robberies.
