Karimova Mocks National Security Chief

Gulnara Karimova

Gulnara Karimova, the daughter of authoritarian Uzbek President Islam Karimov, has accused the chief of the National Security Service of aspirations to lead the country.

Karimova wrote on her Twitter account on November 1 that Rustam Inoyatov, known as one of the most influential men in Uzbekistan, "has started his struggle to become Uzbekistan's next president."

But she said that he is "scared" of her "popularity."

Karimova also slammed investigations into alleged tax evasion by her media holding company, the Terra Group, saying they had been "pulled out of thin air."

In recent days, several radio and television stations controlled by Karimova were taken off the air and the Terra Group's bank accounts were frozen.

Karimova had been seen as a possible successor to her 75-year-old father, who has been running Uzbekistan since 1990.
