More than 70 works by Vincent van Gogh have been temporarily removed from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and taken to The Hermitage, a Dutch satellite of the Russian state Hermitage Museum.
The paintings will be returned to the Van Gogh Museum by April 2013 after the museum undergoes renovations, according to a statement on the museum's website.
The paintings, which include many of van Gogh's greatest masterpieces -- such as "Sunflowers," ''Irises," and "Wheatfield With Crows" -- were transported overnight under police escort.
They were packed in hard-shell cases resistant to temperature changes and bumps.
