Venezuela Presidential Vote Due April 14

Nicolas Maduro was sworn in March 8 as Venezuela's acting president.

Venezuela's electoral council has announced that an election to choose a successor to President Hugo Chavez will be held April 14.

The announcement came after Nicolas Maduro was sworn in as acting president following Chavez’s death on March 5.

Maduro will run in the election as the candidate of Chavez’s ruling socialists.

Henrique Capriles will run as the opposition candidate.

Capriles lost to Chavez in the October presidential election.

Chavez named Maduro, who had served as his vice president, as his preferred successor.

A state funeral was held March 8 for Chavez, who led OPEC-member Venezuela for 14 years.
