A new White House report says Pakistan has made little progress in the past year in battling militants, and that it appears that Pakistani authorities have "no clear path toward defeating the insurgency" in the country.
The report to Congress, released on April 5, says the security situation in parts of Pakistan's border regions next to Afghanistan has deteriorated recently.
It says that Pakistani forces have had problems in preventing militants from returning to areas that have been cleared -- noting that in one case, the Pakistani army has had to conduct major clearing operations three times in two years.
The report says, however, that despite a number of difficulties, U.S. and Pakistan continue to cooperate militarily. The report adds that "heavy fighting" with the Taliban in Afghanistan is expected to resume this spring.
