Women Protesters In Egypt Sexually Assaulted

Thousands of women participated in Egypt's 2011 antigovernment protests.

A protest against sexual harassment in the Egyptian capital Cairo has been broken up after a group of men attacked the demonstrators and sexually assaulted several of the female participants.

The march Friday in Cairo's Tahrir Square was being attended by dozens of women and male supporters protesting earlier attacks against female protesters in other demonstrations.

Earlier this week, a reporter with the Associated Press news agency witnessed an attack on a single woman by close to 200 men.

A number of the victims have suggested such assaults are aimed at driving women out of Egypt's pro-democracy movement.

A 2008 report by the Egyptian Center for Women's Rights says two-thirds of women in Egypt experience sexual harassment on a daily basis.
