Winners Of The World Press Photo Of The Year 2015

World Press Photo of the Year 2015 and Spot News 1st Prize Singles was won by freelance photographer Warren Richardson for this image. The photo, taken in near darkness, depicts a migrant passing a baby under the fence at the Serbia/Hungary border in Roszke, Hungary. (August 28, 2015)

First Prize Singles in the General News category was won by freelance Brazilian photographer Mauricio Lima for his picture of an Islamic State militant being treated in a Kurdish hospital, on the outskirts of Hasaka, Syria. (August 1, 2015)
 

First Prize Stories in the General News Category was won by freelance Russian photographer Sergei Ponomarev. This image from the series shows a Slovenian police officer on horseback escorting migrants after they crossed from Croatia. Under Europe's system of open internal borders, the island's thinly patrolled, easily accessible coastline, within sight of the Turkish coast, might as well be the frontier of France or Germany or Sweden. Second Prize Stories in the General News Category was won by Syrian AFP photographer Abd Douman. This image from the series is of a young victim of the Syrian civil war in the city of Douma. (August 22, 2015)

First Prize Singles in the Contemporary Issues category was won by newspaper photographer Zhang Lei for his photo of Tianjin, China, shrouded in haze. (December 10, 2015)

Second Prize Singles in the Contemporary Issues category was won by American freelance photographer Adriane Ohanesian. The image shows Adam Abdel, 7, who was severely burned after a bomb was dropped by a Sudanese government Antonov plane next to his family home in Burgu, Central Darfur, Sudan. (February 27, 2015) 

Third Prize Singles in the Contemporary Issues category was won by Chicago Tribune photographer John J. Kim. The photo shows Lamon Reccord staring down a police sergeant during a protest following the fatal shooting of Laquan McDonald by police in Chicago, Illinois. (November 25, 2015)

First Prize Singles in the Daily Life category was won by Getty Images' Kevin Frayer. Chinese men pull a tricycle in a neighborhood next to a coal-fired power plant in Shanxi, China. (November 26, 2015)

Third Prize Singles in the Daily Life category was won by Iranian photographer Zohreh Saberi for this portrait of a blind woman at the window of a house in Iran. (November 12, 2015)

First Prize in the Daily Life Stories category was won by Australian Getty Images photographer Daniel Berehulak. This image from the series is of a Chilean scientist walking above the Russian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity on the Bellingshausen Russian Antarctic base. (November 28, 2015)

Third Prize Singles in the Spot News category was won by freelance Swedish photographer Niclas Hammarstroem. It shows the victim of gang-related violence in Honduras. This was the fourth gang-related killing on the same street in one night. (April 4, 2015) 

First Prize Stories in the Spot News Category was won by Syrian photographer Sameer Al-Doumy for his dramatic images of the the aftermath of air strikes in Syria. This photo from the series shows a wounded man walking out of a dust cloud following reported air strikes in the town of Hamouria, Syria. (December 9, 2015)

Second Prize in the Spot News category was won by French freelance photographer Corentin Fohlen for this image of a demonstration against terrorism in Paris. The protest was staged in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo attacks. (January 11, 2015)

Third Prize stories in the Spot News category was won by Turkish AFP photographer Bulent Kilic.This image from the series shows a Syrian refugee child being lifted into Turkey. (June 14, 2015)

Third Prize in the General News Stories category was won by Australian Getty Images photographer Daniel Berehulak for his coverage of the Nepal earthquake aftermath. This image from the series shows residents searching the rubble of their homes for salvageable items. (April 29, 2015) 

Second Prize Singles in the People category was won by Slovenian photographer Matjaz Krivic. The picture shows a mine worker taking a smoke break before going back into the pit in Bani, Burkina Faso. (November 20, 2015)

First Prize Singles in the Nature category was won by Australian Rohan Kelly for this photo of a sunbather oblivious to the ominous shelf cloud approaching her on Bondi beach. (November 6, 2015)

Second Prize Singles in the Nature category was won by Mexican photographer Anuar Patjane Floriuk The picture shows divers observing and surrounding a humpback whale and her newborn calf while they swim around Roca Partida in the Revillagigedo Islands. (January 28, 2015)

First Prize Singles in the Sports category was won by Austrian photographer Christian Walgram for his image of Czech skier Ondrej Bank crashing at speed while competing in the FIS World Championships. (February 8, 2015)

The list of winners has been announced for photojournalism's most prestigious award. The top prize this year went to Australian photographer Warren Richardson. Richardson’s winning image, which was never published, depicts a migrant passing a baby underneath a razor-wire fence on the Hungary/Serbia border. As well as other images of the migrant crisis, highlights selected here include a whale and her calf sharing the sea with divers, an ominous storm bearing down on Sydney, and a highly symbolic face-off on the streets of Chicago.
