Mexico's celebrated novelist Carlos Fuentes has died in a hospital in Mexico City, aged 83.

He was best-known for works that include “The Death of Artemio Cruz” and “The Old Gringo.”

Fuentes played a dominant role in Spanish contemporary literature by portraying a nation that had missed out on its revolution's ideals.

Along with Colombia's Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Peru's Mario Vargas Llosa, Fuentes drew global attention to Latin American culture during a period when strongmen ruled much of the region.
