Yemen Swears In Saleh's Presidential Successor

The only candidate in the February 21 vote to succeed longtime ruler Ali Abdullah Saleh, Abed Rabo Mansour Hadi speaks to reporters after casting his vote at a polling station in Sanaa on election day.

Yemen's new president, Abed Rabo Mansour Hadi, has taken the oath of office before the country's parliament.

He replaces Ali Abdullah Saleh, who ruled the country for 33 years before leaving office in a power-transfer deal aimed at ending more than a year of political turmoil sparked by the so-called Arab Spring uprisings.

Hadi, who was Saleh's vice president, was formally inaugurated following a single-candidate presidential election earlier in the week.

Coinciding with the inauguration, Saleh returned to Yemen after having received medical treatment in the United States.

In exchange for stepping down, he is to receive immunity from prosecution.
