Moscow, 2 January 2004 (RFE/RL) -- The Kremlin announced today that Russian President Vladimir Putin has named Deputy Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliev as the interim acting head of the Interior Ministry.
Nurgaliev replaces Boris Gryzlov, who resigned as interior minister last month to take his newly won seat in the State Duma, Russia's lower house of parliament. Gryzlov, leader of the pro-Kremlin Unified Russia party, was elected on 29 December the chamber's speaker for the next four years.
Unified Russia won control of the State Duma in parliamentary elections last month.
