Explosion In Afghanistan Kills 7 U.S. Soldiers

Kabul, 29 January 2004 (RFE/RL) -- An explosion near an ammunition dump in southern Afghanistan killed seven U.S. soldiers and wounded three other soldiers and an interpreter.

The U.S. Army Central Command said in a statement that the soldiers were working near an arms cache in the southern province
of Ghazni this afternoon. The statement said that an eighth soldier is missing.

The cause of the blast is unclear. An army spokesman said the incident is under investigation. The statement said that the wounded soldiers were evacuated to a field hospital at the U.S. military's Bagram air base near Kabul. The U.S. military leads a 12,000-person force in Afghanistan.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
